Notepad Easter Eggs
Here's one for those who still use Notepad for Windows 3.1 [cough] -- as far as I know, it only works with Win 3.1. (There are several different characters, so try doing it more than once.)
- Open Notepad.
- Press down [CTRL] and [SHIFT] and hold them throughout the entire procedure.
- Goto Help --> About.
- There is a Notepad icon in the top left of the about window. Double-click in the center of it.
- Click "Ok".
- Repeat steps 3-5 three times.
- What's the icebear doing there?
Another one: this is not exactly an easter egg, but more a poorly documented feature. It works starting in Notepad for Windows 95, and I assume it carries through to more recent versions as well. At the very beginning of a document in Notepad, type ".LOG", and save. From then on, the current date and time will be added to the end of the document every time you open it in Notepad. This can be a handy way to keep track of when updates occured.
One other not-commonly-known feature along the same lines (thanks to Qwik for pointing this out) is that the current time and date can be inserted anywhere into the document by pressing F5.
